Find out about the story of Matisse and Picasso this summer in Canberra at the National Gallery of Australia.
NGA’s major exhibition Matisse & Picasso, showcases the rivalry between Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso and is one of the most important stories of modern art. Between them, they set the course of western art history in the first half of the twentieth century.
The exhibition highlights the paths the artists took as they responded to one another’s work. Matisse was very watchful of Picasso’s work and vice versa. They both found it absolutely necessary to acknowledge and absorb each other’s skills and concepts.
Matisse & Picasso features more than sixty paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and costumes while telling a tale of friendship and rivalry.
The exhibition runs from 13 December 2019 until 13 April 2020 and is exclusive to the National Gallery of Australia.
